Got this one at The Mitra in Maarssen
From a can into a snifter
Hops: Cascade, Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe and Green Bullet.
APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger, medium looking, slightly creamy white head with good retention. Hazy gamboge orange with no real carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a full wisp and clings to the glass. Half wisp remains leaving some good lacing down the glass. Solid looking brew.
SMELL: Nice tropical fruits on the nose, with a good amount of grapefruit, passion fruit and mango for sure. Pineapple aromas and some caramel as well. Bold stuff.
TASTE: Caramel sweetness with passion fruit, tropical characteristics, mango, pineapple and some grapefruit bitterness at the swallow. Some alcohol as well. Bold and lingering finish is bitter-sweet with tropical fruit notes, mango and passion fruit, some bitter grapefruit and alcohol lingering on the palate.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Enough weight for the style, creamy enough, goes down fine with a bit of a scratch ‘n burn and finishes somewhat mouth-coating. Some heat lingers.
OVERALL: This is really good. I’m not sure it needs to be 9% ABV, but then again, I’m never sure a hop forward beer needs to be this strong. Regardless, it’s great stuff and there’s nothing wrong with a little extra muscle. Van der Streek has been consistently solid over the last while. Give it a chance if you can. Cheers!
