Got this one from the Duvel guy in Utrecht
From a bottle into a snifter
Aged in Auchentoshan barrels
Brewed for 32 hours
APPEARANCE: Pours our clear black and yields a 1+ finger, medium looking, slightly creamy tan head with good retention. Black body and medium carbonation for the style. Head slowly recedes to a faint wisp and ring. Slight wisp remains leaving touches of lacing down the glass.
SMELL: Peated aromas with earthy tones, leather, a woody character, and a potent aroma of apples, oddly enough. Bold.
TASTE: Lots of whisky, with peated and earthy flavors, some wood character, leather and tobacco up front, then some booze and green apples at the swallow. A bold finish of leather, earthy peat character, oak and wood, whisky, alcohol and some apples flavors lingers on the palate. Very leathery and earthy, with an odd green apple flavors as well.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, a little watery perhaps, goes down fine and finishes a bit mouth-coating. A touch of heat lingers.
OVERALL: Well, usually van der Streek does it for me, but this one is a little off. Peated whisky barrels are admittedly hit-or-miss with me, but this one should be a clear miss for almost everyone. The barrels themselves might not be the problem, as the odd apple character might have come from another stage in the process. Regardless, Van der Streek is usually top notch, so we’ll let this little hick-up pass. Too bad this took a whole 32 hours to brew.
