Got this one from the Duvel guy in Utrecht
From a 33cl can into a snifter
APPEARANCE: Pours out a thick black and yields a two finger, thicker looking, creamy tan head with excellent retention. Black body with some carbonation evident. Head eventually fades to a full cap and leaves sheets of lacing on the glass. Decent wisp remains leaving some nice lacing down the glass as it empties. Great looking brew. Better than the original.
SMELL: Bourbon, oak, vanilla, with lots of dark chocolate and roasted character for sure. Quite roasted. Some hints of butterscotch and toffee on the nose as well.
TASTE: Bourbon, oak, toffee and butterscotch sweetness, with hints of vanilla and some roasted flavor at the swallow. Bold finish of bourbon, oak, some sweet butterscotch, dark chocolate, bitter coffee flavors, and some deep roasted malts linger on the palate. Bitter, very roasted, and sweet bourbon barrel on this one.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Quite creamy on the palate, goes down fine and finishes somewhat mouth-coating. A bit of heat and plenty of roasted bitterness lingers.
OVERALL: This is good stuff. For some reason this is 2% ABV lower than the first canning of the base stout, which is a bit of a mystery, but the big, roasted base stout is still there and barrel aging compliments it instead of dominating it. Though, dominating the roasted base stout would be a tough task indeed. The original is a treat and this is even more so. Thoroughly enjoyed this and would definitely go for it again. Recommended.
