Got this one at the Duvel guy down the road.
From a bottle into a snifter
EBC: 50
EBU: 70
Best Before September 2015
Chinook, pacific gem, magnum, centennial, cascade and Utrecht hops
APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger, medium looking, creamy, light beige head with great retention. Hazy maroon red with lower levels of carbonation. Head fades to a full wisp and coats the sides of the glass. A swirly wisp remains with some falling dots of lacing down the glass. Good looking for sure.
SMELL: Lots of toffee, caramel and juicy citrus hops. Grapefruit, melon and pineapple aromas on the nose.
TASTE: Toffee, caramel and some piney hops up front. Bold finish with citrus, grapefruit, some hop bitterness and notes of toffee and butterscotch sweetness balancing the bitter hop character. Very flavorful and enjoyable for sure.
PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes slightly mouth-coating. Some bitterness lingers.
OVERALL: This is really good. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more praise here locally; a lot of people are treating it just like any other half mislukte hoppy brew. For me this is one of the better hoppy brews to be made in the country. Lots of flavor and aroma without the overarching bitterness that tends to ruin a lot of local attempts at the style. A good malt backbone on this red ale as well. Well done! Recommended.
