Got this one at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam
From a bottle into a snifter
21.9* plato
Described as a black bock, Baltic porter with lots of German, Kiwi and US hops.
APPEARANCE: Perfectly clear, light brown pour yields a 1 finger, medium looking, slightly foamy off-white head with good retention. Clear bistre brown body with no real carbonation evident. Fades to half wisp and bubbly ring. Swirly wisp and ring with a few little dots of lacing down the glass. Though it’s a porter, the color here is probably still too light.
SMELL: Milder nose of leather, roasted notes and some dark fruits, such as raisins and dates. Not all that impressive.
TASTE: Dark fruits, dates, raisins, leather notes and some burnt grain at the swallow. Bolder and lingering finish of licorice, more leather and dark fruits, sweet caramel, burnt black malt and some hints of grassy hops. A touch of bitterness tries to balance the sweetness and burn malts. Pretty flavorful, overall.
PALATE: Medium body and carbonation. Creamy on the palate, enough weight, goes down fine with a bit of a scratch and finishes mouth-coating.
OVERALL: A well-executed brew. I’m assuming this was brewed using lager yeast, as it’s rather grainy and burnt notes are perhaps a little more pronounced than I’d have guessed from the lighter color. Plus the style is traditionally brewed with lager yeast, so there’s that obvious point as well. I’m usually more of a ale fan with stronger porters, so this one isn’t quite my bag of tricks. Still, it’s a quality beer that many will enjoy very much.
