Pint on draught at the brewery. It pours a hazy, golden-honey with a creamy, milk-white head and thick, soapy lacing. The smell is malt-forward with resinous pine needles and a whiff of grapefruit. The taste opens with dry malt and bitter, biting Galaxy and Mosaic hops. At mid-sip there is fruit: grapefruit, lemon, white grape, and pineapple. It finishes clean and decidedly bitter. The mouth feel is medium-bodied with pleasant carbonation, and the 8.3% ABV (lower than what appears in the BA description) gives it lots of substance. Overall, this is a really nice, southern-style DIPA with lots of malt and lots of bitter hops. There's enough fruit to add an additional dimension. It's a very good rendition of the style. I really enjoyed it.

Pours a nice deep amber, not much of a head, but leaves a sticky lacing behind. Smell typical for an east coast DIPA - pineapple, mango, juicy tropical fruit. Some alcohol but expected from the ABV. Taste to match - fruity, juicy, but brought back to earth by some fresh hop bitterness. Carbonation cuts through, small but clear. Creamy finish. Highly enjoyable brew.

L: Consumed from bottle.
S: Fruity and citrus aroma.
T: Nice punch of piney bitterness that lingers. Alcohol is well hidden.
F: Medium body. Dry.

O: Nice DIPA but missing something. Would be interested in trying other Steel String offerings based on this experience.

Poured on tap in a goblet, the beer is a slightly hazed, yellow-copper coloring with a halo of white, foamy head. Aromas of subtle caramel, pineapple, and a subtle resinous hops character. Flavors are more malt forward, with a roasted overtone blending with a caramel and toffee backbone. Subtle piny highlights, with some citrus tart and sweet accents. Balanced, on a smooth, robust body. The aftertaste leans back to the citrus side, with tart and sweet lingers of grapefruit and roasted caramel. Slick, slightly tart and slightly bitter lingering finish. Good beer.

It is refreshing to see a local (NC) produce an IIPA on par with any released from the west coast breweries! Cryin' Holy hits on all cylinders; it's bitter, sweet, hoppy, and the 8.7% ABV is well-hidden! I am diggin' this ale! Congrats to the folks of Steel String, way to represent the Ol' North State!

Who says that the hop rivalry is relegated to the dry and piney west coast IPA or the more malt balanced midwestern variety. Steel String brewers insist that the south get involved in the argument as well.

Their Cryin' Holy ale puts the hop cone front and center, easily out-dueling the hearty malt balanced beneath. Though lightly sticky with light toffee and shortcake sweetness, its mildly toasted barely flavors give the malt backbone and nutty tone.

But all that is short as the hops easily take control over the middle. The peel and pith of grapefruit, oranges and a light lemony twang pull forth and bring out a strong ester character, wrapping around flavors of marmalade, apricot, cherry and fresh tobacco. That's just before its stemmy, leafy and piney bitterness lays a resinous finish upon the palate.

Medium-dry to close, a peppery warmth ensues- linking up hop bitterness, dryness and its alcohol warmth. Echoes of citrus and pulled candy hold the beer's balance deeply after finish.

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Label says Bottle Date 4-4-14

A- Pours a dark reddish amber color with a 1/2 inch beige head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a half sheet of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a jagged ring behind.

S- Very musty aroma that's borderline stinky. Somewhat sweet with some faded hop aroma coming through.

T- Piney bitterness grabs hold but eases into a sweet caramel-like malt finish. Alcohol is well-hidden for a DIPA and the bitterness lingers but not for too long.

M- Sharp and somewhat dry. Medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.

O- Easy enough to drink but it's lacking character and a pleasant hop flavor/aroma. I like Big Mon IPA a lot better.

I have wanted to get over to Steel Strings for quite awhile,it's good to see their stuff bottled and in my area.Bottled on 4/4/14.Pours a deep burnt orange color with a half finger white head sits for a long period.Aromas of tropical fruits and citric hops over top of sweet sugary alcohol.Flavors are a little boozy with pronounced tropical fruit-like hops with a resiny finish, drunken fruit plays a role as well. Not as in your face sweet as way too many of the style are, just solid.

Poured a copper body with one finger head that left some lace patches. Aroma is comprised of a strong citric hop presence, little bit of pine and even touches of soap, spice and maybe even grapefruit but malts are subdued. The beer is the same as the malts just don't come through enough to balance a medium-bodied, heavily hop-flavored (citric with spice and possible grapefruit), so while an enjoyable hoppy beer to relax with, just isn't a cut above some other strong, overly hopped beers.

@ Steel String

Attractive, brassy looking pour with a small white head that fades to a creamy ring. Sweet grapefruit, peach, and green pine hops in the nose along with some warm biscuity base malt. Potent fruity citrus and pine needle flavor. Some malt in there, but mostly hops. Plenty of bitterness and some oily, resinous stickiness lingering. A little better than medium bodied with a slight creaminess. Pretty good overall.
