Cast Iron Billy is a luxuriously smooth and heady stout that harkens back to the smog-filled streets of a Victorian London consumed by the industrial revolution. Imperial in terms of its ABV, this 10.5% delight is a majestic drop of roasty and malty beer that packs aromas of coffee, dark berry flavours and delicate hints of vanilla. A real treat of a brew that should be savoured slowly and enjoyed to the fullest.

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a medium, creamy, mocha-colored head. Smells of quite roasted, caramel malt, milk chocolate, coffee and lighter notes of dark fruit. Taste is a great balance of heavily roasted, caramel malt, milk chocolate and coffee, as well as ligher notes of dark fruit: raisin, fig, licorice and just a hint of tobacco, red berries and herbal hops. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some roasted malt, coffee and chocolate lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and medium carbonation.

An excellent English Brown Stout that is heavy on the roasted malt and bitterness, with some very nice chocolate and coffee highlights as well as lighter notes of dark fruit, licorice and herbal hops. Unfortunately, no-frills, non-adjunct stouts like this are a rare find these days, especially with such a lovely balance of sweet and roasted, bitter notes, as well as a good complexity from lighter, fruity, smoked accents. Quite enjoyable indeed.
