Pours a pitch-black coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells wonderfully of roasted malt and resinous, fruity hops, with notes of chocolate, coffee grapefruit and pine. Taste follows the nose, with an excellent balance of roasted malt and bitter, resinous hops and notes of chocolate, coffee, grapefruit and pine. Finishes quite dry, with a medium/strong bitterness and some roasted malt, grapefruit and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.
As expected, this has got a touch of Black IPA to it, but I believe that the hoppy notes are subtle enough here for this to still qualify as a hoppy Stout, although the lines are clearly blurred. I haven't had that many brews by Pressure Drop yet, but they are really starting to stand out to me as masters of these down to earth, no frills Stouts and Porters that simply rely on a beautiful, subtle balance of roasted malts and bitter hops rather than tons of additives. The dry character without a hint of sweetness and strong bitterness really stand out here.
