22oz bottle given to me by a good beer brother and kept in my refrigerator for quite a while. Released Summer 2016. Served in a Jekyll teku. Enjoyed 2/4/18.
Pours black with a two finger cap of dense tan foam. The head settles to some thin surface wisps, a full collar and several small clumps of lace.
Smells of soft bourbon, wet oak, cocoa, cooked malt, brown sugar and a vague note of something between dark fruit and slight barrel funk.
Taste follows the nose rather well. Bourbon, wet oak, roasty malt, dark chocolate, burnt caramel, a light vanilla note and a faint booze tingle.
Medium, moderately creamy feel with appropriately modest carbonation. The finish is a bit hotter than expected but roasty and tasty with bourbon, fudge and cooked sugar.
My appreciation for Jekyll’s work has been based mostly on their IPAs so it’s great to see that they can drum up a respectable barrel aged stout. This Third Anniversary Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout may not be groundbreaking but is exactly on point for the style. I’ll certainly be keeping my eyes out for any similar releases in the future.
