On tap. Pours a golden amber color with a two finger head that lingers and leaves a couple inches of lacing. Nose of earthy hops and semi-sweet yeast. Taste is a medium malt, citrus and earthy hops, and a note of stonefruit from the yeast with a bitter finish. Medium body and medium carbonation.
This was a nice and nuanced belgian IPA. The hops worked with the yeast really well, even if it was bitter on the back end. Not an intro to the style.

Clear coppery color with adequate foam and some short-lived lacing in the Troubadour tulip. Poured from the 22 oz bottle purchased at Susan's Fine Wine & Spirits in Santa Fe. Smells strongly of honey and orange blossoms. Rather slick in the mouth as the carbonation evaporates.
This is very rich and malty. The Belgian yeasty taste is almost overpowering. The hop flavors don't seem to come through much. There's a resiny, gunky taste with some candied grapefruit peel. Then a long bitter aftertaste. Overall I don't think this is too successful for what can be an interesting hybrid style.

On tap at the brewery in south Santa Fe, poured into a snifter.
The beer arrived looking beautiful with a finger and a half of frothy head with big air bubbles. The frothy head reminded me of what would sit atop coffee. The liquid was copper and orange with a bright golden color close to the stem of the glass. It had a cloudy, unfiltered appearance.
On the nose, I got a lot of sweet citrusy notes, grapefruit in particular. Some sweet malt was hitting my nose as well, along with earthy, grassy hops.
My taste buds experienced similar qualities of citrus and grapefruit, earthiness reminiscent of a saison, some yeastiness and the aforementioned grassy hops. The beer was pleasantly complex but I couldn't quite say I loved the taste.
Perhaps some of the taste objections were the result of the moutfeel, which though initially sweet became intensely bitter and yeasty, which I found a tad off-putting (but only slightly). The beer is very dry and again, is reminiscent of a saison, which suggested to me that I'd love this more in the summer months.
Fiction is a tasty, complex beer, but I'd say the yeast can detract a bit from the citrusy, floral hops and make this a bit tough to drink. I may also need to try several other Belgian IPAs as I may just be averse to this particular style.
