Recipe salvaged by Salem Historical Society from the 1700s. Poured ontap in a nonic, the beer is a muddled, opaque, ruby brown coloring with no head. Nose of earth, rich sugary malts, and old world fruit sweetness. Flavors are rich and sweet forward, with tart cherry and berry, with a rich, caramel and toffee backbone. Balanced, but definitely sweet. Smooth, midbodied, with a fruity candy aftertaste. The finish is slightly cloying, with fruity esters lingering on. Interesting.
