Poured from 12oz bottle into a dimpled mug. The bottle says this is 6%, rather than the listed 5.3%.
Appearance: black with enough haze to prevent much light from getting through; head is a thin finger of frothy dark-tan foam. Stouty!
Smell: quite a lot of dark-fruit character; raspberry and date, along with a bit of chocolate and a hint of roast. This is pleasingly complex and it really works for me.
Taste: raisin, date, tobacco; there's a lot of dark fruit here. The chocolate isn't as present as in the aroma, but there's a good roastiness and a combination of hop and roasted malt bitterness rounds out the end. This is delightfully complex for its comparatively low ABV.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and creaminess.
Overall: this beer works for me on a lot of levels. There's not much else like it around in the mass-market stout category; I'd love to quaff many, many of these.

12 oz single from Fred Meyer in Salem OR $1.49 Pours the darkest mahogany colour with a small sized tan coloured head. Fine aromas of burnt toffee, semi-dark chocolate and sweet creamy coffee. Taste similar but with a bit of cocoa butter in the end.. Nice mouth feel..smooth and silky until the dryness in the end..but that’s good aids drinkability. Nice simple yet tasty stout..you don't get much from PNW brewers.

Delicious, meaty stout draped in coffee. Pours think, dark, and syrupy with a dense tan head. Secret Chief is a true American stout, solid base with rich flavor and meal like texture. Full body that finishes slick and smooth with over roasted malty coffee and licorice coating the palate. Nice winter stout.

Secret Chief Stout on tap at the brewpub in Eugene, Oregon.
Opaque, essentially black body with a decent head. Limited lacing.
Attractive aroma with hints of toffee, coffee, and black licorice.
A bit too much char and bitterness in the finish and aftertaste.
Smooth, medium-full body and adequate but light carbonation.
