On nitro at the Bier Stein, served in a Samuel Smith's Imperial Pint, Black Irish is an almost black brown with a small tan head that leaves decent lace.
Smell is very chocolaty, some table sugar and ethanol. This is where the ABV is the most noticeable.
Taste is also a chocolate blast, more dark then bakers, almost Hershey's syrup like, although the malt sweetness is tempered by firm bitterness. I just had a Double Mountain dry Irish stout before this, and while it was a very good example of that style, this beer reminds me while I don't generally care for those - this is a real stout! A bit of mint hops comes through nicely as well as a hint of coffee grounds, providing nice depth. From the first sip, I loved this beer, but was still a bit shocked. By then end, I was basically flabbergasted. Were it not for a bit of palate fatigue by the end of the pint, I'd have given it a 5.
Mouthfeel super creamy, the full body gives it a substanial feel without being too heavy in the belly.
Drinkability is great, wow. Loving this beer! This is why I love Oregon. A brewery I've barely even heard of, a simple sounding beer that is apparently low on the radar comes out and just blows me away. With only a modest, clean drying influence from the ABV (side from the after effects), the awesome taste can really get one into trouble.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
