A 330ml bottle with a BB of July 2017, so it's well out of date. Here's hoping it has evolved nicely. Acquired ages ago from a webshop and stored in a box. Described on the label as an RIS brewed with Loch Ness water.
A: Poured into a Duvel tulip. A very dark brown that appears ultra-black in the glass. Produces a very small head of creamy brown foam that settles and dissipates almost instantly, leaving a collar.
S: Aroma of intensely rich dark malt with hints of molasses, dried fruit, subtle roasted grain, mild bitter cocoa, a touch of liquorice, ale yeast, stewed hops and a twinge of marmite. The booze is well hidden. Decadent and delicious - very nice.
T: Tastes of profoundly dark malt with notes of roasted grain, prunes, dried fruit, molasses, bitter chocolate, subtle coffee, mild liquorice, a hint of soy sauce, ale yeast and stewed hops. Again, the alcohol is well disguised. Quite sweet, accompanied by a huge malt-driven bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is velvety smooth and creamy, with soft carbonation and great body. Somewhat astringent; dries the palate. Aftertaste of exceptionally dark malt, roasted grain, cocoa, coffee, dried fruit, molasses, ale yeast and stewed hops.
O: Superb - a great RIS with a complex, balanced character. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour are an amazing blend of dark malt notes underpinned by ale yeast and hops. Lovely body. A big beer with excellent drinkability; goes down almost too easily. Well worth sampling.
