Bold, black, and bitter. Roast and chocolate malts drive this unique mainstay from Gravel Bottom. Despite the high IBUs, this beer exhibits a careful balance between the bitterness of the hops and the intensity of the specialty malts in this beer. Notes of chocolate, coffee hit the palate from the malts, and the hops deliver a delightful herbaceous and piney profile for a very satisfying black IPA.

This review is based on a beer that will quite likely never be duplicated as it was finished in early 2020 and kegged until June of 2020 - something that ruins a lot of hop based beers. This is an exception; it was very flavorful but almost completely devoid of any hop 'bite'. I know that's the appeal for many who like the Cascadian beers, but somehow this worked.
Normally, non Covid 19 delayed, this is an excellent example of the genre - strong malts balanced by Cascadian hops and presented in a beautifully dark format. One of the finest that Gravel Bottom produces IMO, and now that they are canning capable, it can always be in my fridge.
