I don't often drink Amber Ales but when I do, I always kick myself for not enjoying this style of beer more often. I'm never let down by an amber ale and Gravel Bottom's Bottoms Up did not disappoint.
Appearance - darker brown with a hint of ruby red (hence the amber). It was served with a thin white head that quickly dissipated.
Smell - it was difficult to smell the aroma of this beer. Gravel Bottom is a very small brewpub and the aromatics of grains in the brewpub overwhelmed by ability to smell my beer. Damn that brewpub smelled great!
Taste - lots of great caramel. I'm a caramel fiend so I really dug this beer. Unfortunately, it was a touch to sweet for me. I got a little nuttiness from this beer as well but the caramel notes reign supreme with this beer.
Mouthfeel - this amber ale is definitely the sweetest and thickest amber ale that I have ever had. Which is fitting as the abv of this beer was 6.5% - I don't recall ever having another amber ale with an abv over 6.0%.
Overall - I will definitely stop by Gravel Bottoms again and I won't hesitate to have the Bottoms Up again if available. It is definitely not a sessionable beer but it really hit the spot for me after dinner.
