Gravel Bottom's very special breakfast stout! Brewed with oats, copious amounts of dark malt, special dark chocolate, and espresso coffee from our friends at Mudpenny.

Indiana Joe from Gravel Bottom. Received from @Whyteboar in Barleywine and Stout BIF #2. 16 fl oz crowler. Received 26/02/25, reviewed 24/03/25 (Review 3481). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated crowler. Stored at home at 39 degrees F and served at 50.7 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature is 57.0 degrees F.
Appearance – 4.25.
First pour – Medium Amber (SRM 12), clear.
Body – Brown (SRM 20), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, translucent ruby.
Head – Average (Maximum 3.8 cm, aggressive center pour), blanched almond, high density, average retention. Stabilizes at a 1.5 cm thick cap with the oxygenated top lightening to sandy tan.
Lacing – Good. Bifurcated band of tiny to near-microscopic bubbles with a couple of blunt stalactites. The thin columns connecting to the crown soon break, joining the ranks of stalactites.
Aroma – 4 – Distinctly roasted malt, slight chocolate, and some coffee. No hops, no yeast, no alcohol.
Flavor – 4.5 – Begins mildly bitter, with roasted malt (chocolate) and barely detectable coffee. No yeast, no hops. No alcohol (9.2 % ABV, according to the label). No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Weak gastric warming. Ends slightly sweet.
Palate – 4 – Medium: slightly creamy: soft carbonation.
Style: Follows the style guidelines as condensed by BA.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 Excellent local (for @Whyteboar) stout – we should all be so lucky! Lacks the harsh bitterness possessed by many coffee stouts – bitterness is present but is hardly harsh. This is a stout with hints of coffee, not coffee with traces of a stout.

Poured dark brown, not quite “stout black” but looked very appealing with its one finger light brown head.
The taste is a well balanced coffee stout, more stout (and its standard flavors) than coffee, which is how I prefer it.
The feel is almost viscous, almost certainly due to the oats being in the mix.
OA, this surprised me tonight as it is considerably better than the first time they brewed it. Good beer!
