500mL bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 7.99. Bottled 9/15/18. Served in a Cherry Street snifter. Enjoyed 4/7/19.
Pours a turbid chestnut with a milky cap of ecrue froth. That pretty head shrinks to a near-complete veneer, modest fluffy band and a few sparse dots of lace.
Smells rich and malty. Caramel, bourbon, wet wood, brown sugar and vague grapes.
Tastes of bourbon-soaked wood, caramel, desweetened candied dark fruit, cereal, bread, some earthiness and a good bit of booze.
Medium body with very little carbonation. The grainy aftertaste has a strong glaze of boozey heat on top of cereal and candied fruit.
Trying something a little different than what I usually get from Cherry Street. Shirewood lays some strong barrel character on a malty, grainy base. Not at all bad but for my tastes it is not quite up to the level that I’ve clme to expect from them.
