Bottled Oct 2021: Aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels 15 months.
Appearance: Jet black, pours to a fluffy tan head with short retention.
Aroma: Roasted malts, cocoa, spices, whiskey undertone, whiff of alcohol.
Flavor: Dark malt (no burnt flavors), spicey, no bitterness, oak wood barrel notes. Sweet initially but finishes moderately dry - no stickiness.
Mouth-feel: Medium bodied - not heavy like you think when looking at beer this dark. Quite warming - alcohol is prominent. Smooth/slick.
Overall: Picked this out on a whim. This was a very easy drinking imperial porter. I actually liked this better than most imperial stouts because it doesn't have the heavy burnt characteristics. Did not really taste like pumpkin to me but I think this a bit of a misnomer because it's more about the spiciness. Dark malt characteristics are present: cocoa, toffee but little bitterness. Has a sweet impression up front and carries through but finishes semi-dry, not having an overly sweet stickiness. Alcohol is prominent in the aroma and flavor, with a nice warming feeling that matches the oak barrel flavors nicely. I'd say they pushed to the edge of the alcohol warming mouth-feel because any higher abv and this might become harsh. This beer is almost exactly one year old - bottled in Oct. 2021. Liked it. Would be great in Oct/Nov. Quite pricy at $14 for a pint, so this would be a special occasion beer for sure.
