Shrub Steppe is a brewery and barbecue joint on the edge of Richland. The vibe is not terribly special, it didn't feel either new or lived-in and welcoming, but service was friendly and prompt. They have 6 house beers and 6 guest taps, which is a pretty decent selection, but I wasn't particularly impressed by the house offerings. The barbecue, however, is fantastic -- this place is worth a visit more for the food than for the beer.

As an aside, they are located right next to a place that does Hanford tours, and if you go on the tour you get a 10% discount at Shrub Steppe.

One of the best places for BBQ in the Tri-cities. Typically has a good selection of their own beers, but was limited today. Fair selection of NW beers.

Shrub Steppe is located in an "business incubator" type of strip mall/business park. Ironically, they are a few doors down from another micobrewery & pub (White Bluffs Brewing). There is an outdoor seating area on the grass in front of the building, where a woman with a dog was mortified that her black Lab rushed up to me to sniff my shoes. Hey, I've had much worse things happen to me!

Once through the front door I found myself in a roughly retangular dining and drinking area. In one corner, a plazma TV was mounted from the ceiling, facing towards the rest of the room. At the rear of the dining area was a bar and cashier station.

I believe there were about 8 taps available. I opted for the Rockin' Eagle India Session Ale and the Hop Goddess IPA. Both did a good job standing up to the spicy sauces I put on my food, but did little else to stand out. The IPA in particular was a study in average, with ony 56 IBUs. In general their beers seems to be serviceable without being terribly distinctive. In a way, I was not surprised as the impresion I got was that their focus is more on food than beer.

Having now indicated that the primary focus of this place is on food, I think I can say that this is probably the best BBQ food you will find in the Tri-Cities by a wide margin. I had an outstanding pulled pork sandwich on a poorboy roll, and was given 8(!) BBQ sauces to choose from. I opted for the spicy Kansas City and the spicy Carolina styles, while also throwing on some of their featured special slaw of the week (Cilantro).

Service was friendly without too much hovering. The waitress seemed to be well-versed in how to respond to quiestions about the differences between their beers, and was good a seeing what I needed. She was clad in a Lofa Tatupu jersey in anticipation of the Seahawk-Packers game that would soon be on TV.

I like the idea of a brewery that also specializes in a type of food (and look forward to the day when someone in the region opens up a combined brewery and pizza parlor!), but it would be a mistake to come here just for the beer. Instead, I'd have some food and a beer to wash it down with, then walk a few doors down and have some beers at White Bluffs Brewing.
