The time has finally come. We have been itching to make a traditional porter for a long time. Sunken Ledge is a tribute to our good friend Toby Chambers, who was instrumental in the construction of Boxing Rock…and who also brews an amazing porter of his own at home in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Those of you who have visited the brewery will know our tanks all have names, and the first batch of Sunken Ledge fermented in the tank we named Toby.
On Toby’s recommendation we used Golden Promise pale ale malt as the base for this medium-bodied, mildly bittered porter. It pours a deep mahogany colour with a persistent tan head and there is a subtle molasses aroma as you bring the glass to your lips. The flavours that follow are of dark chocolate and coffee, in fact the coffee taste lingers pleasantly…gently encouraging the next sip.
Smooth, lightly carbonated and very drinkable, Sunken Ledge is a porter that pays tribute to the tradition of a great beer style and the tradition of great friends who are there when you need them most.
Oh, and in case you are wondering, Sunken Ledge is a shoal in Shelburne Harbour, and as far as we can tell has never been responsible for sinking a ship.

Pitch black with only a slight film of off-white head around the top of the glass. Aromatically weak, with some very faint coffee and cocoa coming over along with herbaceous qualities of bell peppers. Flavors of coffee and slight smokiness come over on the palate, leaving fairly quickly to yield a finish of only slight smokiness and peppers. Pretty light in terms of mouthfeel, with a pretty exuberant carbonation. I honestly have no major complaints, but can't highlight any great aspects of this beer either. Just meh.

Black with great head, mild nose and flavour, nicely carbonated but less flavourful than many in style.
