22 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in an oversized wine glass
This beer looks brown until held to the light where ruddy highlights appear. It is topped with less than an inch of tan head that leaves a little lacing.
I get some cocoa and milk chocolate aromas. I also get some plum and fig smells.
The first thing I taste is milk chocolate. I get hints of plum and dark cherry.
This is not as effervescent as other bière de gardes that I have tried.
The taste is a huge contrast to what I have come to expect from the style. This beer came across more as a brown ale. It was a good beer but way off my expectations of the style.

They call this a "Winter Bière de Garde." It's quite a flavorful dark brew with a Belgian tang. Pours a beautifully sudsy amber brown in the Orval chalice. Creamy carbonation and an expansive mouthfeel.
Rich and warm-toned with flavors like a Belgian Strong Dark Ale. Sweetish and tangy to start, and raisiny and dry to finish. Great balance among the sugars, dry yeast, and deep fruity flavors. So sudsy in the mouth to help the flavors linger on the tongue. Hints of mint and dried figs, but subtle and aromatic.
This is an interesting variation on a rather loose style. I like it better than most of the strong dark Belgians I've had lately. There is something satisfying about the maltiness lightened up with the light body and fruity tang. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at the brewery tap room in northwest Denver.
