Great toasted malt flavor that is a combination of roasted pecan and a trace of molasses.

a silver medal winner this year, congrats to these guys for that. the beer is pretty good, but im not sure it stands out from a crowd of good brown ales. its roasty more than it is chocolate malt, which i like, and which works really well with the drinkable medium body. lighter brown in color, glowing almost amber, but holding a glorious white head. the nose is heavy roast and coffee, but minimal bitterness. i get a hint of chocolate malt, but its way in the background here. the roast is dominant in the flavor, long lasting and rich, if a bit one dimensional. i like the lighter body and the big dark flavor, it makes a cool drinkable beer thats not real common, probably why this won. carbonation is great, and the aftertaste has some balancing sweetness, its really well put together. one of the more simple beers these guys do, but you have to nail the basics, and they certainly have with this one.

On tap at the brewery into a snifter. Reviewed from notes dated September 6, 2016.
A-The beer arrives with a dense, creamy head of grayish brown head. Retention is pretty good. The beer is the color of dark tea and it is very, very murky.
S-The aroma is a pleasant, earthy mixture of cocoa, barley husk, and roasted flavors like brewed coffee. The aroma is pretty intense for a brown ale at this ABV, but it lacks the bitterness of many examples. Nice.
T-The taste is less cocoa flavored, but still earthy with a nice nutty note and some roasted, husky, barley flavors. It is virtually hop-less, but there is a little hint of citrus flavor to go along with the roasted malt notes.
M-The body is medium in heft. It is substantial feeling but drinks easily, just like a brown ale should in my opinion. The carbonation is moderate in volume and semi-crisp.
O-I tried this beer when Diebolt first opened a few years and did not come away impressed, but this last visit changed my mind. I would put this as one of the better brown ales being brewed in Colorado right now. Flavorful, drinkable, and perfect for a cool day.
