The pour is of a handsome, leathery red, clear and uniform, with a khaki head that quickly fades into a firm cap. Later on, it thins down to a rim around the edge. Good, but not great.
Nose is very nice, with big sticky prunes, hints of mace and other spices, and a bit of wheat husk. Some appealing roastiness/smokiness as well. A touch sticky, but restained. Well done.
Unfortunately, the taste reveals a much thinner, more watery beer underneath. There is a somewhat unappealing sourness on the finish as well, which seems out of pllace with the style. Adding the dregs helps bring some balance, but the beer still can't live up to the promise of the nose. The smokiness becomes more predominent, and the other flavors recede back into the scenery.
Carbonation is on-point, but the overall mouthfeel is a bit thin. Could use more body, and a little less attenuation.
Overall, not a bad swing at the style, and worth picking up to try. Needs work, but on the right path.
