On tap at Wicks Brewing Company. 11/08/15.

Tropical fruit and faint pine in the aroma. The taste is only mildly bitter up front with lots of juicy tropical fruit following. A very good pale ale.

Looks delicious like all beer. Smells like tropical fruit. Great nose for 5%. Tastes is more bitter and piney with the fruit on the finish. Overall a very good 5% pale ale.

Says this is a “Best of Show” contest entry from local San Diego homebrewer Ketchen Smith

A: Unfiltered Ale look of sunburst orange with golden peach hues through the body. Looks like one of those new East Coast IPA’s with a significant amount of haze from the yeast and hop particles. There rests a smooth ivory foam cap on top with some ample staying power before finally settling out to a tiny crown. A small amount of splashy lace is left stuck to my glass after every sip.

S: The nose is just dripping with dank, juicy, fruitiness. Redolent with peach, apricot, grapefruit, gooseberry, citrus, guava, and passionfruit. There are some floral qualities to this as well and it comes off a bit tropical too. Hits with a mild dank herbal note on the back end along with some faint malt sweetness emerging. There is also a bit of ripe stone fruit esters reminiscent of pear. Stellar aromatics for an APA.

T: The flavor delivers an intense fruit cocktail laced full of fresh hoppy flavors. Leading with peach, apricot, and prickly pear, grapefruit zest, and green melon. Segues into more tropical passion fruit or dragon fruit and the finish develops into that dank resinous herb note. The malt offers in an intricate blend of doughy bread, sugary grains, and mild roast with a perfect amount of balancing sweetness to it while not giving much body to the overall brew. Delicately complex this seems to have a lot going for it. Drinks more like a sessions IPA really with all dem hops. There is a moderate amount of restricting bitterness to the beer and the alcohol is completely masked at just over 5% ABV. Makes for a very fine and well balanced quaff. I gotta say this is some pretty outstanding stuff.

M: Super light with only a semi moderate filling body sewn into a light creamy texture. There is a mild peppery bitterness midway and the finish is dry and lifting with a long resinous linger.

D: Anatomically awesome! This is sort of a hybrid but Real talk: As an APA, one of the best I have ever had. As a Sessions IPA, one of the best I have ever had. Just a touch more body to this and it would be a grand slam for me.

Hats off to the homebrewer and for Coachella Valley Brewco for selecting a real winner here. Their standard lineup, while well crafted, has always struck me as pretty light fare with more of a general mass appeal. But here we have something real special. Definitely looking forward to seeing more from this budding brewer.
