Poured from 16oz can into a plastic tumbler. No date on the can that I can see.

Appearance: pale golden hue with a light haze and a finger of frothy ivory foam atop.

Smell: quite malty; relatively sweet with a bit of a floral character and some of that characteristic “spiciness” of rye. It’s okay.

Taste: the malt is toasty, with some of that ”spicy” rye element, and a rather bitter, earthy hop character. It’s a little bit rough for my taste.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: Coachella Valley’s IPAs are rather hit and miss for me — some are pretty decent, but this one is just not my favorite.

I am trying this beer off the tapper at the brewery as part of a four sample flight. It poured a very slight hazy golden with thin white head that is leaving some lace. The scent had bitter hop notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with bright semi sweet malt base with a bitter pine resin presence. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it is a great beer.

This is described as “Joshua Tree Rye IPA.” Pours a clear amber with adequate foam in the chalice. Kind of a musty aroma with a whiff of the freezer. Spritzy and sharp on the tongue. Flavor is an odd mix of old oranges, malt, and butter cookies. There is a touch of bitter graininess that might be the rye. Bitter aftertaste. No date, so I can’t tell if this is not fresh, but it’s an unlovely concoction. From the 16 oz can purchased at Mirage Wine & Liquors in Palm Springs.

Desert life is sure to create a thirst and thanks to Coachella Valley Brewing, there's an IPA for that. In commemoration of nearby Joshua Tree national park, their J. T. IPA is a must when taking in the heat and the views.

Slightly haze and pouring medium gold, the bubbly J.T. IPA builds a creamy white froth that carries a sharp, bright and citrusy bouquet of fresh orange peel and a blend of other citrus and tropical nuances with a sprucy sense of spice. Gentle sweetness of light honey, caramel and faint toast is almost granola-like in a first and malty impression.

Receding malt sweetness allows for a bright hop flavor to display itself on the middle palate. Grapefruit, orange peel and a hint of dried pineapple give a zesty and refreshing hop taste after their perfume dissipates. Trending spicy, bitter and drying, the late taste is a classic West Coast balance with the resinous, peppery, piney grip of hops latching onto the gullet for a full and bitter closure.

Medium light in body, the beer's crisp and succinct bitterness closes out the session with a highly refreshing, drinkable and off-clean hop display. A linger of pine, grasses, hemp and herb trail into a long and bitter aftertaste to beat the heat and quench the thirst.
