Staropilsen "Star of Pilsen"
500 ml green glass bottle coded "F17 # L/PS".
$3.99 @ Total Wine & More, Claymont, DE
Notes via stream of consciousness: So this is the Star of Pilsen? The best Czech Pilsen you can buy? I kind of doubt that given the other beers I've tasted from Staropilsen but here we go. It's poured a clear deep-golden colored body beneath a finger's width of white foam. It's skunked, as expected, but if you give it a minute your brain will start ignoring that and you can smell what else is going on. This one is bready rather than grainy, and a touch toasty. There are some minor herbal hops but it's not a hoppy aroma at all. The taste follows. It's clean, and a firm bitterness balances the light sweetness of the malt. It finishes dry and softly bitter with just a touch of herbal hops lingering. In the mouth it's medium bodied and crisp. So what's my take on this beer? Like the other beers I've sampled from Staropilsen both the head retention and lacing could be better. They've all been skunked as well, but I assume if you could get a sealed case they'd be fine. Beyond that, this is simply the least interesting of the four or so that I've tasted. It's not bad, and it's clean and well-balanced, but there aren't a lot of hops to it, and it just comes off as fairly standard.

Wow new Czech pilsner that I had never heard of before...so far Czechia is basically the only country where I have never had a terrible beer...possibly Belgium also. And maybe Germany.
Can design makes it look kind of cheap. And it actually was quite cheap. Upon pouring, it looks amazing. Smooth head and ok retention. Golden colour. Refreshing lemoney malty aroma.
Lemon and honey really dominate the flavour. And there is a full interesting mouth feel and a dry bitter aftertaste. Malt is flavoursome but maybe a little heavy. There are some malt/yeast flavours happening that remind me of a Belgian dubbel or tripel.
Overall it's good, if not great.

Star of Pilsen has a medium, white, soapy head and a mostly-clear, bubbly, golden appearance, with minimal lacing. The aroma is of cracker, biscuit, and grass. The flavor is similar with mild hop bitterness. Star of Pilsen has a medium body and a crisp finish.

Bottle. Clear. Darker than some. Aroma is slightly skunky. Some sweetness. Flavor is heartier. Sweet adjunct. A little bit of butter. Almost no hops detectable. Light metal. Lighter bodied. Slightly sticky. Not. Very. Good.

A: The beer is relatively clear yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high bright white head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface, a narrow collar, and bits of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of bready malts and grassy hops are present in the nose.
T: The taste has sweet flavors of bready malts along with hints of grassy malts and a light amount of associated bitterness.
M: It feels a bit more than light-bodied and somewhat clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I’m not sure if it was the green bottle, the trip across the pond, or a combination of both, but the skunky nature detracted a little from this beer.

Well in code, with these types of beers, freshness is key.
As far as macro Czech Pilsners go, this is actually pretty good.
Slightly hazed saturated orange, visible carbonation ascending. Initial head of foam, about a fingers width that rises and settles after a couple minutes leaving behind minimal spotty lace.
Aroma is minerally with a whiff of grassy noble hops, and buttered biscuits.
Taste is much the same, a very smooth supple body compliments the delicate flavors. Buttery, crackers malt up front, with a crisp grassy bitterness on the back end.
Overall it was enjoyable enough and certainly more drinkable than most Euro lagers. Simplicity is often misunderstood and underrated.

So I got this beer from a "beer-o-the-month" thing. Off the bat I don't like it. Green bottle and STUPID metal wrapper on the cap that crumble around the mouth-hole making it incredibly difficult not to ingest metallic substances and pro-longing the time it takes from me to get a slight buzz. Smells of pungent skunk with slight lime and floral notes. Tastes like your typical euro-trash Heineken, but with slightly more skunkiness at the finish. I actually don't mind throwing back a few Heineken if I'm playing beer pong or something, but definitely not a beer for connoisseurs. Overall better than I thought, 30/100.
