Might Meets Right - Blueberry Maple

Lighter black body with brown highlights, tan foam disappears almost instantly. Smell is more bourbon and oak than maple and blueberry, also some barley in the background. Taste is very memorable, granting the drinker a new take on the style, plenty of maple, blueberry, bourbon, brown sugar, caramel, wood, and some earthiness, but does so in a dryer and not overly sweet fashion. Almost more like a baked good in complexion, really pleasant. Feel is smooth, bright for style, and dryer than expected while still being creamy. Could drink this all year round, versatile.

 

2018 vintage tasted in a Rastal Teku from a 12 fl oz can on March 29, 2019. Aged in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels which previously aged maple syrup. Brewed with blueberries. Sweet and boozy.

Black appearance.

A rough pour yielded a small tan head; decent lace.

Oak, blueberry, caramel & mild booze heat notes in the nose.

Medium thick, sticky mouthfeel.

Blueberry, maple syrup & oak flavors up front; mild bourbon heat notes on the finish.

Tasty but not over-the-top to the point of being cloying; a well done dessert stout.

 

 

2018 12oz can, poured into a snifter. Look is a bit thin but with decent lacing, what head there is goes quickly. Smell is very boozy, predominant whisky but with dark fruit notes from the barrel. Suprisingly, not a lot of maple or blueberry on the nose, which is what I've come to expect from variants like this made by other breweries. Taste is really where this beer shines, as the maple mellows out the boozy undertones while the blueberries leave a light tart aftertaste. Feel is well done, just the right amount of carbonation to make the drinking experience pleasant. Overall, the taste of this beer is really well put together. Some breweries go too far with either the blueberry or maple, making the beer either taste artificial (too much blueberry) or too sweet (too much maple), but this does a great job of melding all the complex elements into an enjoyable experience. I was expecting this to be my least favorite of the 2018 release, and if that holds true then the other beers should be spectacular. Kudos to the brew master and the barrel program for blending a wonderful beer.
