24 fl oz. 'BIG A$$ CAN', no canned on date or freshness information present. Another new one to me from SlapShot Brewing, this one their Tripel style ale. 8.20% abv listed on the can.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours a big fluffy 4 fingers of head on top of a burnt sienna orange body, not unlike the appearance of an IPA too much. Not too much lacing to speak of, not much else going on. Looks alright for what it is.

S - An earthy / creamy yeast aroma dominates. Floral, with lots of earthy clove spice noticeable.

T - Taste follows the nose: earthy, creamy, & yeasty with lots of lingering clove spice. Mostly a big clove bomb, above anything else.

M - The feel is crisp & carbonated. A hefty medium-full body. Heavily carbonated. Semi-bloating. Not terribly easy-drinking, by any means.

Overall, an okay example of the style from SlapShot. Not one I would return to again, though, and 24 ounces of Tripel might be a bit much. However, the format might be nice for those that are big fans of this style.

If you have been following me on other social media outlets, you may be aware that I just returned from a glorious nine (9) days in Chicago, drinking beer and exploring my third-favorite North AmeriCAN city (behind only S.F. and Pittsburgh). I also scoped out various Binny's locations and found this "BIG ASS CAN! 24 fl. oz" on the shelf at their South Loop location, which is where I normally go, given a) its proximity to Union Station and b) its attached Tasting Room. By the time I got it home, it had begun to pooch up, even slightly CANpromising its seam! Drastic action was needed, so I photographed it and submitted same for approval, then put the CAN in the reefer to suspend further such action. Pic approval happened quickly, so now it is on with The CANQuest (tm)!

From the CAN: No verbiage, but a crude cartoon of a hockey-playing friar.

The Crack! was a bit of a struggle and I nearly snapped off the tab as a result. I am a seasoned veteran of this sort of thing and so I began a gentle Glug that erupted in a mountain of French Vanilla-colored foam. I allowed this to fall and die down before attempting a second pour, this one bringing the head right back up and forming what looked like the top of an ice cream cone! This was a highly active beer, no doubt. Part of my problem stemmed from trying to get it from the lip of the large opening of the CAN itself and into my awaiting glass without the head overflowing the lip of the glass. I was finally left with a finger of head as a cap once everything had settled. My efforts were not entirely in vain, either, as it proved to have NE-quality clarity in an Amber to Deep Amber/Light Copper-colored beer (SRM = > 9, < 13). The nose left no question that a Belgian yeast strain had been employed. It had notes of vanilla, black pepper, tropical fruits and musty newspaper. Mouthfeel was full, thanks to all of the carbonation. The taste was super-sweet. Cloying, actually. Man, it was like CANdy! The black pepper was prevalent, initially, and then the sugary sweetness came on like a freight train. Is it possible that they employed CANdi sugar in its production? It became difficult to really parse out individual flavors with all of the sweetness. It even had a fusel alcohol heat, suggesting that it was not done fermenting, possibly accounting for its behavior in the CAN. Finish was hot, dry, peppery, just a big beer that could really use some tweaking and subsequent improvement(s).
