I’m all in on All Inn, ever since I visited their brewery and was… well not blown away by their beers, but suitably impressed, they’ve got a niche for making solid yet hardly-mind-blowing brews. Enter stage right: All Inn Brewing Co Citra-Hopped Extra Pale Ale, an XPA – a term with which no brewer seems to be able to nail down what it actually stands for: eXtra Pale Ale, but extra what? Extra ABV? Extra Pale malt? Extra pale colour? It seems to be different every time I crack a can open. This XPA isn’t a higher ABV one then like Mismatch’s (now discontinued) Extra Pale Ale, so it must be a paler hue (or using more Pale malt) I guess we wont know until I crack this can open, so if you will please: [insert cracking can sound here], cheers!
Poured from a 375ml can into a nonic pint.
A: Looks pretty pale, so I’m calling it an: Extra Pale (coloured) Ale then. Glad we got that sorted. Presents an ever-so-slight hazed golden/straw body with a white head that doesn’t hang around for long leaving minimal lace and splotches on top. 7/10.
S: Passion fruit with lemon, touch of butterscotch in the malt, light dry cracker base, and not much else. I’ve definitely clapped my nose on better aromas, and that Diacetyl character is surprisingly high for an American Pale Ale, but there’s been many worse aromas out there too. 6/10.
T: Not All Inn’s finest hour then. Starts out with that butterscotch touch, goes on towards a clean dry cracker/biscuit base, mid-to-late palate passion fruit and lemon, grainy note as well, followed by a splash of grassy hops and a fairly innocuous bitter finish. Diacetyl aside it’s just not very hoppy for an APA, it’s a bit too dry and muted. Flavour makes this feel like an entry-craft brew… though that said I did have a can of Kosciusko Pale Ale that was gifted to me the other day and that has definitely become a “sex in a canoe” beer. 6/10.
M: Mid to light bodied, medium carbonation, not terrible for an APA, but a bit more body/less carbonation wouldn’t go astray. 7/10.
D: I’ve had better All Inn beers than this, and it’s a shame I haven’t reviewed them yet, and TBH Legbreaker has improved a lot from my original review, so even though it sounds like I’m coming down hard on All Inn, I really do dig many of the beers I tried at their brewery, and maybe when I get out there again I’ll take my pen and paper (i.e. my phone) and get some notes down. Aside from that Citra-Hopped is alright but it just isn’t the beer for me. 7/10.
Food match: Chicken burgers, not too spicy though, with some onion rings.
