Format: standard 330mL dark brown bottle, funky and different label. Not my thing, but different at least.
Appearance: pours out a vibrant amber yellow with plenty of swirling carbonation. A thin white head drops to a thin ring. Looks better than most Steamrail offerings.
Aroma: a touch of grass and some floral, but dominated by a somewhat awkward malt and grain note.
Taste: some hops up front - possibly grass and floral but a bit indistinct. A touch of malts again but not much. Still a reasonable beer. I'm impressed after the other Steamrail offerings.
Aftertaste: a touch more hop bitterness here, with a somewhat awkward malt fug.
Mouth feel: light in body with a sharp yet somehow flat carbonation. Seems a bit flaccid, which is a pity.
Overall: I haven't been the biggest fan of Steamrail Brewing's offerings thus far, but this is a bit of a step up. Still not great, but far better than their first beers. Better pricing too, where at first they were trying to sell their pretty ordinary beers for over AU$60 a case.

After the reasonable (although a little boring) Ghost Of Eyre Pale Ale from Steamrail Brewing I've turned my attention to their Hops Dropper Pilsner. Now Pilsner, a really good Czech Pilsner with the superb Saaz hops, is something that eludes most Aussie brewers - and I feel somewhat an expert on Czech Pilsners having drunk my own body weights worth several times over when I visited that fine Republik. So apart from James Squires I am yet to come across anything that even comes close to the real taste of PlzeĆ.
Poured from a 330ml bottle into a Stein.
A: Presents a clear light amber body with a foamy white 1cm head that stays on well.
S: The aroma is a bit too malt grain dominated. There are notes of barley, baker's yeast, spring water and hints of cut grass. Where are the spicy/floral Saaz hops? Not sure, certainly not picking them up in the aroma.
T: Flavour profile is bland and a bit of a muddle between the German and Czech styles: Barley malt, cut grass, baker's yeast and apple peel are there but overly muted by this 4.5% ABV "Pilsner". This beer is screaming for hops, and with a name like 'Hops Dropper' it is thoroughly and utterly disappointing.
M: The feel of this beer is its only saving grace - mid to light bodied with a nice dense carbonation.
D: This "Pilsner", and I'm using quotation marks to show how vexed I am with this beer, is about disillusioning as Milli Vanilli's career and twice as bad. Really don't waste your time on this unless you like bland Pilsners and James Squires 150 Lashes Pale Ale (also a massive let-down of a brew).
Food match: After drinking this I felt like eating whole hop flowers to at least get some hop flavour from somewhere.
