this is a rather textbook english barleywine, and frankly one of the better beers to have ever come out of this place. its big and rich and boldly flavored, but its never too sweet or too hoppy, and it likely ages with the best of them. i wish they would bottle it for that reason. deep caramel color, crimson around the edges, with just enough of a cream colored head to make it look alive, but its not overly expressive in the appearance. not too alive, more patient and reserved, good body and clarity for sure. smells like toffee and breakfast cake, slightly woody, although i dont think it sees oak, golden raisin, sturdy english ale yeast, and just enough hops to balance, english as well. in the flavor, its all there, layers upon layers of grain character. almost more savory than sweet at times, and with just the right amount of alcohol pushing through. not sugary in the finish at all, which i like a lot, and there is plenty of yeast character too. notes of red apple and brown butter and candied date round it out. among the most complex and well executed beers i have ever had here. i wish it was a permanent offering.
