the keg they have on tap has a little age on it from what i am told, and the beer shows it, with a wonderful maturity about it, its dry for the style, still meaty on the body, but with a really refined mouthfeel that i love. this is quite possibly the best beer these guys have ever made, at least in my experience. its very dark, true midnight black, and it holds a half inch of bubbly mocha head. aroma here is bitter roast, a ton of specialty dark malt and unmalted black roasted barley, with a high quality coffee note, a lot of bitter earthiness, char, and tobacco. english yeast abounds, high gravity and finished. the flavor is more of the same, a great base of dark grains here, super sturdy, ashy and a touch of smoke and leather, coffee too. the yeast dries the right up, and the dark malt gives it a ton of bitterness. the alcohol is somewhat well hidden for what it is, and this drinks smooth and fancy. i hope they kept the recipe around for this one, its one of their very best, and honestly one of the better big stouts free of trendy adjuncts i have had from a denver area brewer lately... beautifully done.
