a red rye ipa, not a bad beer, but a little basic, and a little samey when taken in context with a lot of the other hoppy beers in here. the hops have a familiar columbus grapefruitiness, which is pleasant and fresh on its own, but with the richer malt base it makes a rather heavy complexion, the rye spice and the intense bitterness of the hops clashing a little bit on my palate. there is a smoothness of feel here which helps keep it drinkable and balanced tasting, but its a bold balance with the dry rye, the sweet crystal malt, and the fresh and fruity hops which also pack so much bitterness in. i think its got some nice layers, but they arent all congruent with one another. this might be better with less kettle hops, and maybe at more like 5% abv, a lighter, mellower brew would let these flavors coexist a little better i reckon, but its cool to see some new beers popping up here, where the list hasnt changed as much as i would have liked to see over the years. they have some cool stuff on tap right now!
