Returning to my cellar, I am trying Hurly Burly aged in a port barrel. I went to the brewery before COVID-19 threw the world into a tailspin. I chatted with all the lovely people there, and they had this beer hiding in the back. I coaxed someone to let me purchase it. It has sat on my cellar shelf since then, waiting for today to consume it. I am using a tulip glass and serving it at 48 degrees. The pour created a half-fingered, light tan, creamy, foamy head with poor retention. Considering the high ABV, I expected little retention, but I have seen some beer with excellent retention with higher ABV. The quick dissipation left a scant ring around the beer. The color is dark brown with a reddish tint, charting at SRM 24 and with some clarity. The appearance of the beer is above average.
Nosing the glass, I first smell caramel, port, wood, burnt sugar, toffee, light floral bouquet, and bread. Smelling the glass again, I detect candied oranges, raisins, figs, a light funky note (it does not appear to have any aging note), and alcohol. The beer has a heavy malt presence with a lovely aged barrel note.
The flavors start with bready, malty sweetness, candied fruit, brown sugar, port, oak, and floral notes. Sipping the beer again, I detect caramel toffee, lightly toasted cereal gains, wood, burnt sugar, flowers, and earthiness.
The mouthfeel is astringent, and the coating finishes hot. The body is medium-plus and has medium carbonation.
Regrettably, the aging did not significantly alter the beer's flavor, although it may have mellowed the high ABV. Disappointingly, this barleywine falls short. The harmony and balance in the beer are disarrayed. The alcohol, even after six years, retains its heat, which would have been more pronounced when fresh. The malt profile, while heavy, lacks depth. The port aging does offer some relief, but it's not enough. This is a letdown, especially considering the other beers I've enjoyed from this brewery, like Super Toast.
