Love the music themed taproom. Nice outdoor space. Everything I've tried from them was good with one exception. The service at the taproom is weird. A long winding line leads up to the bar. If you're at the bar they may not check on you. Wide variety of styles. I did not order food but the guys next to me had some good looking nachos.

Large rectangular open space with a bar that extends about half the length of the space. Bar has space for a dozen and a half patrons with a dozens of 4-top tables and booth available otherwise. A window in the back extends the view into the brewery itself. Back wall is otherwise lined with beers in to-go formats. Decor is heavily focused on guitars and rock, including guitars behind the bar and guitar neck tap handles. Cohesive design making it feel unlike a gimmick and more like a well-appointed brewery that focuses on an interest area outside of beer. Staff is fast and quick. Selection is great, spanning a wide array of styles, which is fantastic for such a small brewery. Pilsners, IPAs, wheats, browns, and a few heavier options - making it very easy to find something that fits the mood. All in all, a great place to stop in for a beer.

I visited Heavy Riff when I was in St. Louis last week. They had 15 taps of their beer, plus a full bar. It's got a cool music-themed atmosphere and was pretty stuffed with people, many of whom appeared to be regulars. I had a number of beers, including the peach IPA, which was surprisingly good, and a pretty good brown ale. Not every beer was a hit, but mostly they're making good stuff. Worth checking out!

nobody talks about this place and i dont know why, i had a great time in here, the beer was well ahead of expectations, and the food was quality as well. its a cool taproom, rock and roll themed if its not obvious from the name, they had a bunch of famous guitars on the wall, including one signed by neil young! it doesnt feel like a hard rock cafe though, its more authentic than that. there are some tvs behind the bar, which i never love at a brewery, but this also has a little bit of a sports bar thing going on. they had a great list of beers covering all the bases, some quite ambitious, and i was impressed with all four that i had, but the coffee brown was probably my favorite. all were really good though, and i am already keen to get back in and try the others. the brewhouse is in the back but you can see it from the bar, shiny and new looking, they are doing some great stuff. the service was awesome and my glass never got empty before the next beer was being poured, and they seemed to know the beers pretty well. i had a nice meal in here too, a smoky pork wrap and some green chili, both were great. this will not be eveyones ideal taproom atmosphere, but i like it because its a little something different than the reclaimed wood and iron look that every single brewery does. neat place, quality and creative beers, better than bar food, fair prices, ill be back in here for sure.

The food here was great, and the service was good.
Nice atmosphere. Had an IPA that was decent but didn't get a chance to try more of their beer.

Located in a nice neighborhood from an outsiders point of view. A musical themed brewpub that is a little too dark for my liking. The bartender had to use the light on her phone to see anything behind the bar. As others have said, no table service. The beers were decent with a wide variety of styles. I liked the brown ale the most. Did not try the food but other people seemed to like it. Worth a stop.

Dark and fairly well laid out with concert posters and other rock memorabilia. No table service, but they kindly accommodated a group of 10 guys. Decent smoked meats and sandwiches. The beer is meh at best. Sedate saisson and underwhelming IPA. There are much better options for better beer, but this is a decent food or one beer stop.

I'd wanted to try this place for a while, I read about it being a nano-scale brewery with a great atmosphere. So, on a Saturday evening, I visited with my wife. The neighborhood could use more parking, but it was easy to find. It has the feel of a welcoming neighborhood bar. Small, and the bar is the center of the establishment. The crowd churned quickly, mostly folks who were out for a beer before or after dinner. We sat in a booth, where I had an excellent brisket and blue cheese salad. My wife had a tasty chili. No table service, but bartenders were attentive. The beer was okay. More like average homebrew than exceptional professional craft. The vanilla and rye lager, however, were quite good. Worth a stop, although I really enjoyed the atmosphere (as a neighborhood watering hole) as much as the beer.

I visited this brewery last night and it's probably about the size of a McDonald's to give some perspective. Guitars, drum heads, and old concert posters are hung on the walls. There's a couple of tv's at the bar and a shuffleboard table towards the back. I think they had about 20 beers on tap including Angry Orchard cider and a guest tap. There's no table service, but the bartenders were attentive. There's no table service, but it's a small place so it wasn't a real issue. I tried the Vanilla Coffee Underbrown, the Left Coast IPA, and the Mammas and Papayas APA and I would highly recommend the first 2. I also tried the pulled pork sliders, which were tiny and unremarkable. The spent grain pretzel was bland.

Fantastic hidden gem. I work down the street at the violin shop and this place is one of the best in the city. It unfortunately gets dwarfed by Seamus McDaniels and Felix's but damn this place is incredible. It needs to be more well known. I'd honestly put it up against Schlafly any day or even 4 Hands. It's a fantastic St. Louis brewery that people MUST know about. Also, the food is fantastic.

I have had many enjoyable experiences at Heavy Riff. The guys who own and run the brewery are some of the nicest people you will meet. During the day it is rarely crowded so grab a stool at the bar, check out the tap list (or ask for a recommendation) and enjoy the quality tunes that the gang plays. The Heavy Riff beer selection continues to grow every time I visit but I still absolutely love the Velvet Underbrown. It is one of the best brown ales in town! Aside from their own brew they usually have some excellent craft choices from all over the country. They just installed a Randall and I was really impressed by the randallized IPAs that they had on tap. As of late summer 2014 they added barbeque to the menu and I have really enjoyed the food options. It is usually served pretty quick and they have about 3-4 different sauces to choose from. Another major perk of the brewery is the FREE darts and shuffleboard which they provide. Next time you're in Dogtown be sure to give Heavy Riff a visit for a quality pint and some BBQ!
