perhaps a beer that's trying to wear too many hats. this one is a bit confused. between the Belgian yeast, the really dark malt, and all the hops, its just one too many qualifiers for me to have a cohesive and really enjoyable drink. it has a nice dark complexion, but not much head after it sits a minute. the nose is a battle between the roasted barley and the Belgian yeast, with the hops being a clear loser here. too much going on aromatically to make much sense of. the flavor is equally muddled, but the hops come out a lot better, piney and not too bitter. the yeast is more pronounced than the malts, but it cant quite cut through the density to liven this one up. I do like the fuller body though, and its got a real seasonal sturdiness to it that appealed to me for some reason. other than that though this beer is all over the shop just a little too much for me, an identity crisis of sorts.
