No canned date, but know this was released for Sac Beer Week, so fresh.
Appearance - Pours semi-clear and golden orange in color with an off-white, rocky two-finger width head. Good retention, resulting in a fair, consistent layer of suds and a thickening to a ring around the edge of the glass. Solid amount of lacing found all around the glass, with broken sheeting and huge spots making up the bulk of it.
Smell - Aroma fills the nostrils with notes of orange, lemon and a hint of grapefruit, with a steady toastiness that's near equal to the citrus bouquet.
Taste - Follows the nose. Hits first on some orange and lemon peel before some grapefruit pith kicks in mid-taste and strengthens in the finish, but all along is a very present toasted malt backbone. A hint of caramel in there as well. Finish is bitter, as mentioned, with the grapefruit pith dominating the aftertaste, though a trace of toasty flavor still remains.
Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with moderate, tingly carbonation. Slick texture helps it to go down easy before a slightly dry finish.
Overall - Big malt character in this one, but it's much needed to help combat the potent citrus bitterness on display here. For the price, I'd be hesitant to buy it in can form again, but maybe I'd give it a go on tap.
