I am so thankful to have supporters of The CANQuest (tm) like my people in Altoona! They inquired of me as to whether I had gotten any of Riepstine's Pub's CANned beers & when I replied that I had recently reviewed the IPA, they sent me some of the others, including this one. That's pretty cool! Also, many thanks to this site for an almost-immediate approval of the pic.
From the CAN: "'Where It's All About The Beer!'"
I Crack!ed the CAN open & got a splash of squirting liquid across my fingers. Brimful? It was overfull to the point that opening the vent left it with nowhere to go! Naturally, I celebrated with an inverted Glug which created two fingers of deep-tan/light-brown head with moderate retention. Color was Dark Brown to Very Dark Brown (SRM = > 27, < 34) with NE-quality clarity & ruby/garnet highlights. Nose had a roasty smokiness, not quite charcoal, but close. Mouthfeel was full & creamy! The taste was very chocolaty, lightly smoky, not at all charcoal. This is what I imagine a Porter to be. Its flavor was not as pronounced as a Stout might be, which is why Porters also get fruit adjuncts added to them - they allow the fruit flavors to be noticeable. This also took on a light nuttiness as it warmed. The finish was sweet to semi-sweet, but it lacked enough bitterness to be truly semi-sweet. It was definitely malt-driven in terms of its flavor. I would recommend it to anyone curious about a baseline for a Porter. This stands as a solid example of one, IMHO.

Pours a dark brown color with a slightly off white head that leaves sheets of sticky lacing down the pint glass. No sediment or otherwise distracting features, and certainly looks like a stout.
Roasty malt aroma, plenty of char and coffee here with just a hint of smoke and muted ale yeast fruit notes. A hint of cocoa.
Black patent malts in the taste for a pleasingly robust porter. Smooth notes of dark chocolate, coffee, charcoal and nutty malts. Hop and ale yeast character do little but add depth with small bitterness and muted fruit notes, this porter is all about robust dark malts.
The feel is medium to full bodied, and has a good amount of carbonation. Drinks smooth and full, a very solid rendition of the style.

Surprised I've not reviewed this until now...Poured into grip shaped goblet, color is dark brown, quite effervescent on the pour, head presents 1 finger deep, light brown in color, head then dissipates to nothing, no lacing or ring.
Smell is quite feint, very low aroma with hint of roast and chocolate and maybe some nutty malt notes.
Taste is where the beer hits its stride: great porter blend of roast, chocolate, and nutty malts, light earthy hops. Roast is almost smoky, chocolate is not overly sweet and nutty/toffee malt provide some additional depth.
Mouthfeel is crisp, moderate bitter and light sweetness work well together for a lingering flavor that is not overly sweet.
Overall this is an excellent porter, another nice dark beer from Riepstine's - the Pitch Black Lager is great as well.
