12 oz bottle dated 9/7/18. Pours a hazelnut brown from the bottle forming into a silky dark chocolate black color, with a creamy and fuzzy khaki head of 2 fingers. Lots of lace left behind on the glass.
Aroma is of crisp chocolate bar, slight toffee and caramel, faint earthy/piney hop, and faint roasted malts.
Flavor is milky, roasty, and earthy. Reminds me of chocolate milk without enough chocolate...then it follows with mushroom earthiness and sharp grassy, piney hop. Resins linger and hang on. Very faint toffee. A bit washed out overall, and then the bitterness creeps in.
Feel is silky smooth, man it's smooth...but a bit on the light side, very firmly in porter territory.
Overall, it's toffee and chocolate yes, but rather piney and earthy. I think they were afraid of going too sweet with it but they should have backed down on the hops. I love the mouthfeel of this beer though.
