Per brewery, "dry stout aged in bourbon barrels with Serrano, Anaheim, Jalapeno, and Habanero peppers" I think it comes in at about 5.5% if I remember the menu correctly.
Growler from 11/08/2014 into snifter on 11/10/2014
Appearance: Pours somewhat watery indicating a lack of viscosity from the growler. A 1/3" head of relatively light head (in color and density) remains for about a minute or so before light lacing remains atop the glass while a delicate rim hugs the rim of the glass. Held to the light, the beer allows nothing through, but the edges give off a warm brown hue. 3.75/5
Smell: nondescript peppers dominate throughout and are accompanied by booze, wood, milk chocolate, raisins, and some bourbon sweetness. There are good background flavors that compliment the beer, but it seems the peppers dominate the smell a bit more than I'd hope for. 4/5
Taste: Boozy raisins and chocolate come first and are met immediately with a comfortable amount of spice that rests on a malt backbone with very little bitterness. The spice fades rather quickly, and we're left with a bourbon raisin finish. For a non-imperial stout, the beer itself carries a lot of alcohol that isn't well hidden by the other flavors of the beer; this may be a byproduct of the lighter bodied beer coupled with a bourbon treatment. 4/5
Mouthfeel: This is my biggest issue with the beer. It's description lends you to imagine a load of flavor that require a chewy stout to handle and this beer, with medium body and moderately bright carbonation just don't fit the bill. The beer does coat the mouth nicely and this allows the flavor to linger after the sip is had. 3.5/5
Overall: I fell that Green Bench could have done better here with regards to using barrel space and a nice flavor profile towards a non-imperial stout. The light body of the beer and decent carbonation are to be expected from a beer that clocks in at around 5.5%, but I feel the treatment they put on the beer required a little bigger beer than that. I may sound critical, but I don't intend to be - It's a good beer and I am glad to enjoy the growler of it. I would order this again, but I wouldn't seek it out. 4/5
