As I poured this, it had an odd carbonation that really stuck to the side of the glass, with almost no head; this disappeared rather quickly. Moderate translucent brown in color.
Aroma quite subtle, caramel malts, roasty and almost smoky. I don't detect any hops at all.
Flavor is a nice brown ale of caramel, almost maple syrup (without the sweetness- I know that doesn't make sense, but that's what I tasted, honest). This is full of subtle charactersitics- don't look for a full blown heavy tasting beer here. But pleasant nonetheless.
mouthfeel thin and relatively dry, quite pleasant and easy drinking.
Definitely worth a try for a new style for me!

Flavor is a nice brown ale of caramel, almost maple syrup (without the sweetness- I know that doesn't make sense, but that's what I tasted, honest). This is full of subtle charactersitics- don't look for a full blown heavy tasting beer here. But pleasant nonetheless.
mouthfeel thin and relatively dry, quite pleasant and easy drinking.
Definitely worth a try for a new style for me!

Pours a bright, hazy dark amber-copper with a good frothy off white head that lasts and leaves a sticky lacing in my glass, bready caramel aromas, nutty, buttery, caramel flavors , medium body with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel, finishes clean and dry.

Appearance: Red-tinted mahogany color--quite clear--with a large head of white foam.
Aroma: Sweet toasted bread.
Flavor: Rich toasty maltiness, with a good bitterness (more than found in a typical dunkel lager, for instance), and a clean, dry finish. Yeast character is clean and neutral.
Body: Slightly watery feel, with medium carbonation.
I find this tastes like a hoppier-than-usual oktoberfest. Ale characteristics are minimal.

Brown, slightly dark, but crystal clear. The aroma when first poured had a nutty Munich malt aroma. Once the head died back the aroma dropped off. It has a good bitterness, but the finish has a metallic aftertaste. The body seems appropriate, and it is an easy to drink beer, but that aftertaste really hangs in there.

The aroma of this beer is odd. It's spicy, sort of peppery, but there was a tang in there of... seafood. I'm sorry, that's the only adjective I could come up with that hit the mark, or came close, in any event.
Thick tan head, dark root beer colored body.
Mouthfeel is roasty and chewy, with a sharp, metallic taste in the mouth.
Nothing that I would seek out again in this bottle.

I originally sampled this on 26 April 2003. I am writing this review form my notes.The appearance of this beer is a clear brown color. The mouthfeel is very full on the tongue w/ a slight bite. In my opinion this altbier is good, but not great. nothing special

Presentation: I know from trying the Urhahn Helles Alt last night that this is brewed by Hochstiftliches Brauhaus, Motten, Germany.
The bottle is a brown glass 1 Pint 0.9 fl.oz bottle with the usual Teutonic style neck and main body labels. The main label has a picture of some kind of crowing bird and the words Auerhahn-Bräu Bütten Alt. Not much more than that, no strength, just only the importers name Morandell Imports of LA.
Appearance: It has a beautiful cream colored continually expanding voluminous head whilst it is poured. Massive amounts of carbonation. Huge frothy, whisked and well beaten head never rescinds once formed, it clings tenaciously to the side of the glass. The main body of the beer has a lovely chestnut brown color, perfectly lucid. It looks good in a tall flute shaped glass.
Smell: A lovely malty fresh odor that is really inviting. Slight yeast traits but nothing overpowering or that detracts from the malt aromas. A pleasant enough nose - my only complaint is that it is just a little light in strength.
Taste: Starts with a low level introduction, when its chilled this is accentuated. As it warms slightly I find it improves. A smooth malty introduction leads to a well-balanced middle. The finish, once the beer is swallowed, leaves a lovely malt-bitter edge on the cheeks. The lasting finish is enough to make you pause before taking the next sip. Light flavors and nothing complex, rather a one-dimensional beer in fact, but nonetheless, it is a pleasant enough attempt.
Mouthfeel: Errs on the light side this one, but there again this accusation could be leveled at the beer in general. I am not sure if this is typical for the style as I have not had that many beers, so I will give it the benefit of the doubt in this instance.
Overall: Much better than the awful Urhahn Helles Alt that I tried yesterday from the same Brewery. Not a bad effort all round, but nothing special. I would drink it again but not buy it.
