On tap at the brewery into a nonic glass.
A-The beer is walnut brown with a short mocha head on top. It is mostly opaque but holding the glass up to the light reveals no cloudiness or sediment. Head retention is OK and the foam leaves just a few stray pieces of lacing on the glass. Nice looking.
S-The aroma is malty with nice notes of light roasted grains and chocolate. I sniff milk chocolate and cocoa, but a little hint of bitter dark chocolate too. The rye is noticeable, but not strong, and it adds a unique woody, spicy note. Sweetness is mild and there a little nutty note too. I'm liking it.
T-The taste follows the smell pretty closely. Layered notes of chocolate and cocoa blend with a subtle rye spice that lingers on the palate after each sip. It is a little grainy and rough around the edges, but mostly enjoyable. No hop flavors to be found here.
M-The heft is medium and carbonation is very smooth; almost creamy. It drinks easily despite the bold flavor profile.
O-The rye is more subtle here than many rye beers, but it works. The rye mixed with the chocolate flavors makes for a unique beer that I would not want to session, but is interesting for one pint or so.

Not much foam on the dark ruby brown brew. Served in a big pint nonic. Satisfying big malty substance. There is a little sweetness that is nice against the darkness. Lots of resiny and grainy flavors. Overall this is an interesting aromatic beer that is way darker than the usual Rye Beers.
Brewer ways this is made with Pale Rye, Caramel Rye, and Chocolate rye malt-- who knew there was such a thing? Hops are Perle, Saaz, and Opal. It's a crazy mix that is well worth trying to expand your education on what can be done with rye. I liked all the roasted flavors that are distinctly different from the usual dark malts.
This is really drinkable, though more carbonation and a creamy texture would have made this an ace. On tap at the east Denver brewery.
