From a 650 ml bottle (November 2017) to a snifter.

A-The bottle opens with a little pop, but the beer pours flat and syrupy into the glass. No head or collar to be seen. Color is deep, dark brown; almost completely opaque. Would be good looking if it had a little foam on top.

S-The aroma is a sweet, boozy mixture that pretty much nails the Almond Joy. I sniff dark chocolate, coconut, mildly bitter almonds, caramel, and confectioners sugar sweetness, as well as a healthy doze of bourbon-like alcohol heat. Barrel flavors are pretty intense, too, with notes of wood, vanilla-marshmallow, and brown sugar.

T-The taste, unlike the smell, is a little disjointed. I am still picking up coconut and almond, but the almond flavor is too bitter and the sweetness from the beer is not mixing in with the other flavors. The nice notes of dark chocolate seem lost on the palate and the overall impression of the beer is more medicinal and grainy tasting.

M-The beer is pretty sticky, as you might expect, and carbonation is very low. Heft is moderate to light for the style.

O-I think coconut and almond, while delicious, are tough flavors to nail in a beer and this beer shows why. The nice smell devolves to something a little more bitter and boozy than I would like on the palate.
