This malty strong ale is the base beer for a new adjunct flavor that Cellarmaker is exploring: nuts! We enhanced the classic nuttiness of Maris Otter barley and caramel and raisin flavors of a variety of English crystal malts by conditioning the beer on 4lbs per bbl of toasted American native wild pecans!

Allergy warning: this beer actually contains nuts...

probably my favorite beer i have ever had that actually does have nuts in it. i mean, the pecans here could not possibly jump out any more than they do. so often nuts are lost to gnarly sweet malt and end up being more of a protein body thing rather than a flavor, accent at best, but here they are front and center. i love that its not a black beer, this is pale amber at best, with a nice caramel color to it and a very english grain complexion. layers though, not just one or the other, but obviously several malts, built perfectly to showcase what the pecans can do. the pecans are really potent, strong and raw tasting, fresh and earthy, different from others, but very distinctly pecan as opposed to a general nutty flavor. the grain sweetness and the nut flavor work so well together, and the tiny bit of alcohol that comes though unites the elements well. i would love to know more about the process, i would have killed to have made this one at home. also cool because i could drink a million of them, just alive and vibrant and delicious, i appreciate every drop in the glass. a truly incredible beer, if you like nuts, or have dreamed about something like this, get yourself there. this is mental!

Caramel malt with pecans! Medium amber in color with little to no head and lacing. Smooth, drinkable. My son who prefers IPAs liked it. Great concept. Keep experimenting with nuts!

Had on tap at cellarmaker poured into a half pint glass. A nice deep reddish brown with a hint of nuts in the smell and a definite taste of the pecans when you drink it. Overall a fun beer and concept,

The beer is a medium amber color. It’s fairly cloudy. Good sized white head. Lots of lacing. Good retention. The aroma is fairly nutty with a good dose of caramel maltiness. More brown ale in character than anything. The taste is chock full of nut flavor. A bit surprising, actually. Fairly dry. Solid toasted malt character. It’s really just a pecan explosion, at least for a beer. I’m not sure this flavor works best dry and fairly light, but it’s nice enough. Medium to light body. The nut flavor is just a bit odd, but I still feel like this is a successful experiment.

Cellarmaker is a brewery in San Francisco that I respect for it's super hoppy beers that it continues to produce on a consistent basis. One aspect about Cellarmaker is that they rarely produce the same beer twice. There are exceptions, but the general rule is that they only produce the recipe they create once. So, once it is gone, may never see it again. It is a great way to keep the stock flowing, and to keep fans, such as myself, stopping by to try out what they currently have.

I stopped into Toronado because I know they always have a great selection of beers on tap. I saw that they had two Cellarmaker beers on tap. "Contains Nuts" and "Batch No. 1 Porter" which happens to be a repeat.

Anyway, going on Cellarmakers reputation, I tried the "Contains Nuts." After research, I learned that this was an experimental beer by Cellarmaker to have nuts as part of the brewing process - in this case - Pecans.

The beer did not bowl me over as most Cellarmaker beers do with their devotion to hoppiness. In this case, this tastes more like a brown ale, still delicious, but I would have rather had an IPA.

the taste is carmel pecan. very rich in flavor. malty goodness and very smooth.

The look is also brown in color - not a surprise for what tastes like a brown ale.

The smell is mild pecan / beer. :)

Feel is rich in texture. Overall, I like it, but it is not my preference.
