As the clock hits 10 for Cellarmaker we will release this blend containing several of our choicest barrels. Ten Year Barleywine brings together young and old barrels for a refined beer that has vibrancy and depth. 20% of the blend is barleywine aged for 8 months in Savage and Cooke Lip Service Rye whiskey barrels; 30% barleywine aged for 16 months in Weller Special Reserve Bourbon barrels, 30% barleywine aged for 16 months in Stagg Jr. Bourbon Barrels; and 20% Imperial Stout aged for 25 months in Heaven Hill 10 year barrels. We present this as a special offering that we know you will enjoy, but it also doubles as a birthday gift for ourselves…

Poured at fridge temp. Pours almost still - zero head. Nice a dark.
The nose brings notes of intense salted caramel, dark chocolate, rye, bourbon, roasted malts, a bit of black licorice, figs, and prunes. The barrel is really crazy intense on this one.
The taste is equally as intense as the nose. Tons of toffee, bourbon, bourbon, and bourbon! The rye does come through for sure. Oak, Dutch drops (salted licorice candy), vanilla, plums, malts, and brown sugar.
The mix of barleywine and stout is always interesting. The 20% stout definitely comes through, but I would definitely describe this as a barleywine. Lovely bottle with a nice long finish. Glad to have tried it.

Look - Black and thick with no real head but nice rimming and lacing
Smell and taste - lot of woody caramel char with a toffee and slight dark chocolate. lots of BW taste but with a slight stout. Really complex and the taste is a step above the smell
Feel - full body and light carb
Overall - Really great complex beer

Received this bottle as part of the BSBIF#1 ! Bottle has been in my cellar since receipt and is at cellar temp before I pour it into my snifter. 12.7 fl oz bottle with 2023 vintage on the iridescent label, which is pretty cool with reflective rainbow effect.
the beer pours pretty dark for a barleywine, cola brown from the bottle and rests as a black coffee in my glass. Gotta be the 20% imperial stout in the blend.
A wispy and fizzy beige head of just above surface covering foams up and fizzles away quickly and only remains as a thin edging on my glass.
Aroma on this beer is dark roasted malts, heavy cacao chocolate, molasses, brown sugar, bourbon notes and a bit of fusol alcohol. No hints of hops on the aroma here.
First sip of this beer reveals a medium body with soft and sort of pillowy mouthfeel. Carbonation is very fine and gentle on my palate. There is a bit of stickiness on my lips after each sip.
Flavor is similar to the nose and generally sort of sweet I get chocolate, molasses, brown sugar, a good bit of bourbon and some roasted notes. Again, hops are absent here.
There is a bit of warmth that kicks back after each swallow to remind me of the 16.2% ABV. This is an enjoyable sipping beer, very glad to have tried it!

Sweet caramel and brown sugar candy, chocolate covered raisins, a hint of rye spice, and a subtle bourbon barrel nose on this one! Taste follows exactly with some smooth and well-integrated barrel heat on the backend of the finish.
While cool, it feels more medium-bodied for a barrel-aged barleywine, but, as it warms, the mouthfeel takes on more depth and has a smoother feel on the palate. I had this on tap and out of the bottle and as I was expecting, this is more enjoyable out of the bottle IMO.
On a side note and as matter of discussion for all of my beernerd friends...can it still be considered an English Barleywine if 20% of it is an imperial stout? Isn't that more of a Black Barleywine or Strong Ale? Hmmm...something to think about and discuss! Whatever you want to call it, this is delicious. Ha!
