This is just coffee in beer form. Beer is just the vehicle we chose to get our coffee fix, much like ketchup on some fries or cream cheese on that shitty bagel. Coffee Vehicle features a rotating cast of coffee roasters. For this round we selected our new neighbors down in Jack London Square, Oakland’s Bicycle Coffee. The great people and roasters over at Bicycle have kept us well caffeinated throughout the planning, construction, and opening of Cellarmaker Oakland so it was a no-brainer to use their Light Roast in this version of Coffee Vehicle.

Pours dark brown with a light, slow-to-form 0.75" cola head; settles out to a thin ring. No lacing. Nose is black coffee, roasted malt and barley, earthy/metallic notes. Nose is bitter, black gas station coffee up front; mid-palate and through the finish, rounder notes of roasted peanuts. As it warms, some rounder and slightly sweeter notes begin to hit, maybe even a trace of dark fruit. Overall, however, it stays relatively bitter and dry. Mouthfeel is light considering the ABV, with a very light carbonation. The coffee is flavor is certainly up front here without veering too sweet, but would like some more coffee depth (dark fruit, roast, roundness, etc.).
