Poured from 330mL bottle into a wine glass. Best by 4/27/23.
Appearance: golden-orange hue with a bit of a haze and a thick finger of frothy, pillowy ivory foam. Quite lovely.
Smell: very malty with a bit of a sweet character, though the sweetness is not overwhelming. I like it, although I feel like the malt could have a little more complexity.
Taste: quite malty and relatively sweet, but with enough bitterness to back that sweetness up. A pretty good execution of an imperial pilsner in my book, although again, the flavor lacks complexity.
Mouthfeel: medium-rich body with a moderate carbonation and a good creaminess.
Overall: a pretty solid imperial pilsner; it does a good job of avoiding the booziness that is prevalent in strong lagers. Not bad at all.

Some people might feel nostalgy towards the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and create such a beer like this, with Austrian, Czech and Slovenian elements. Well, for us Hungarians the monarchy was nothing good therefore there is no pride in naming one of our craft beers this way... and if it was only for the name or for the portrait of Franz Joseph only I would have never bought it.
Opening it up you feel the Czech Saaz hops somehow but then the sweet malts take over the taste to an extent that I tend to agree with the previous commenter that it almost tastes like a double bock. But then again it is somehow different and you realize that it's the Saaz! And you realize again and again that thevSaaz is a wonderful hop variety, the best in Europe - because in large quantities it can produce such an intensity in taste and smell that I really like.
I somehow disagree with the idea of the beer, of the monarchy thing - to me it is the Saaz hops only that make it good. But then, they make it really great. Worth giving it a try and worth paying attention to the hops.

Clear golden color with off-white head. Aroma has sweet malt notes with some sugar and alcohol notes. Taste is sweet and malty with some bread notes at first but on the finish it has some slightly bitter earthy notes and a hint of cardboard. Medium body and medium to light carbonation. It tastes more like a heller bock than an imperial pils.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
