Brewed by Bierfabrik (the company formerly known as Beer 4 Wedding) at Schoppe Brau. Acquired at Hopfen und Malz in Berlin. 33cl brown glass bottle with interesting green label and unbranded black pry-off pressure cap served into a Berliner Kindl Weisse glass in me friend's gaff in Berlin, Germany. Reviewed live. Expectations are above average; this brewery seems interesting.
Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated. Served cold.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: Half finger wide head of white colour. Decent creaminess and thickness. Retention is bad - about 1 minute. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.
BODY: Dark murky nontransparent copper. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible. Appears to be adequately carbonated, I guess. Dull and unappealing.
Not unique or special. It's a subpar appearance for a pale ale overall.
AROMA: It's got a surprisingly prominent hop presence for a German-brewed ale. Pine, oily notes, nectary notes. Some sweet bready pale malts. Fruitcake. Clean barley.
It's seemingly a bit too sweet, and the hop choices aren't great, but it's generally appealing for a pale ale. If you gave it to me blind and told me it was American-brewed, I wouldn't question it.
Yet as it warms, I do pick up distinct notes of urine - which are very off-putting. Ammonia. These off-note are troublesome.
No yeast character or alcohol is detectable.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, refreshing, crisp, and nicely soft. Lightly oily. Medium-bodied, with apt thickness. Complements the flavour profile nicely. Well-carbonated. Overall presence on the palate is nice.
Not hot, boozy, gushed, astringent, harsh, or rough.
TASTE: Ammonia/urine, onion, garlic, sweet bready malts. Hop are prominent - oily hop notes, pine, nectary hop notes, a hint of citrus, and some generic floral hop character. Fruitcake. It's somewhat dank. I do like it in a general sense, but the balance is lackluster and the off-notes detract. Fairly simple for a pale ale. The choices of hops aren't great. There's decent subtlety here, but the build isn't gestalt. Still, it's cohesive and approachable.
Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour.
OVERALL: I'll easily finish the bottle, but they do need to work on those pesky off-notes. It's drinkable and enjoyable, but far from world-class. Still, I see real promise here and I'm pleasantly surprised a Germany brewery even attempted it. I wouldn't have expected it to be as nice as it is, but it's far from great. Worth trying.
