Catfish Cream Ale

A smooth pour from the bottle settles to a dark amber colour with a very low head. The smell is pleasent and the mouthfeel is smooth. The taste is decent; a creamy, malty and rich flavour makes this a beer I would reccomend. If you can find it, give it a shot!

Coppery tea colour that purs a big head that settles very quickly to a partial film.

Sugary, malty nose. Same to drink. Excessively spritzy with just a touch of cream to finish. Generally thin bodied. Slightly boozy finish.

Too sugary and spritzy to be enjoyable.

This is a rare one to find on-tap anywhere, but tried it at Carlos and Murphy's in the Osborne Village.

This is a copper coloured cream ale that pours with a minimal head, but keeps its lace to the bottom of the glass, surprisingly... The nose is a bit acidic and bitter, not that exciting for me. After the first sip you're not quite sure what to think, perhaps that someone lost their way a little. It feels like Agassiz was trying to do something unique with this brew but executed it rather poorly. The taste is rather badly balanced, the acidity and sourness overpower the sweet taste that I look forward to in Ales. I Can't even say that the acidity is a "citrusy" acidity, because it's much more generic than that. Big Rock's Warthog does this style much better, which is too bad, since I'm all for the local breweries. Mouthfeel is nice and tangy, and sticks to the back of the throat a bit, not all that smooth. Aftertaste is just a lot of sticky sourness. All in all, not a big fan of this one, but I have been known to have a few pints when I feel like something different.

Oh yeah, and this beer is even less exciting from a bottle, so I'd avoid that whole mess altogether.

Fizz..pale yellow like you know-what. Foamy. OK, better than a national brand, but may take water next time. Waterly light. Seltzer fizz. Salted nuts. A hint of cream mid-sip. Sugary sweet, tad of fruit there, yet bitter aftertaste. Not a good cream ale. One of many complements of Osborne Freehouse

This review comes from a cumulative tasting of a few bottles over the last couple of weeks. Colour is amber-brown, with a fairly small head that doesn't last well. First try brought the impression of cotton candy, this had a very light mouthfeel and was quite sweet - not too fruity, just sweet. Hops were absent. Second try brought me what I believed to be a corn taste to it - this has adjunct, then. Third try, I've decided this is a decent beer, not likely to be drunk often because there is so much that's better. I'd put it somewhere between Sleeman and Big Rock's cream ales (with the former being worse and the latter being better).

A friend of mine brought this beer back from Sault St Marie in Ontario, Canada for me. I know the brewery exists in Winnipeg but i have NEVER seen or had one of their beers until now.

Dark ruby-red in colour. Very underwelling nose and likewise for the taste. To me it was like meeting the little brother of Creemore Springs lager. It looked and ALMOST had a similar taste but it came up well short. For a micro, i found this beer to be quite bland and it lacked ambition. It reminded me of most other cream ales that are made for the masses.

I know that Agassiz brews several other styles and i still look forward to trying one of their other brews. Hopefully it can overshadow this average drinking experience of Catfish Cream Ale.
